Zvonareva Survives Rain and Kirilenko

It was a rainy day for the Cincinnati Open yesterday but the top seeds came through...well, some of them were able to come through the rain and their opponents. Russian Vera Zvonareva saw the thunder strike on her going up against fellow countrywoman Maria Kirilenko but almost seven hours after they started their match, Zvonareva survived a 2-5 deficit in the third set to advance.

“I always believe in myself,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if I’m down 5-0, I think I can win it.

“Sometimes, they’re delayed to the next day, but as far as going back and forth in the same day, that’s the longest,” she said with a laugh.

The Russian next play Italy's Flavia Pennetta. Ironically, last year at the US Open the Italian came back from match points to stunt the Russian in three sets.
