Sampras Hears Some Good News
While most of his trophies might not be returned after they were stolen out of the storage facility, Pete Sampras will be happy to get some good news. The president of the International Tennis Federation has offered a replica trophy to Sampras for his two Davis Cups wins.
Sampras recently reported some of his trophies and memorabilia were stolen from a public storage facility in Los Angeles. Lucky he kept his Slam trophies home.
“We were sorry to learn of the theft of so many of Pete Sampras’s trophies," ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti says. "We know how special a Davis Cup victory is for a player, and if he is unable to recover the loss of his two Davis Cup trophies, we would like to offer him a replica trophy in recognition of his outstanding record in the event.”

Henin-Clijsters Doubles Team...Possible For 2012
Kim Clijster and Justine Henin will be playing for the first time since Wimbledon this year when they go against each other in less than two hours at the Antwerp Diamond Game exhibition. During a press conference earlier for the event, both talked about a possibility of playing together as a team for the 2012 Olympics in London.
They teamed up once before but lost to Russia at the 2006 Fed Cup quarterfinals. Both are using this exhibition as a warm-up for the Australian Open in a couple of weeks.
Henin won the Olympics in Athens in 2004 while Clijsters has never competed in the games. The three-time US Open champ skipped the event in 2004 due to a conflict with sponsor Fila and Adidas.

Del Potro Receives Sydney Wildcard
Former US Open champ Juan Martin Del Potro will kick off his 2011 season down under in Sydney. The Argentine received a wildcard from the tournament.
The former world no. 4 currently is ranked 259 in the world after missing most of last season due to surgery to his right wrist. He came back late this year in Bangkok and Tokyo but lost in the first rounds of both tournaments.
Sydney is played on Jan. 9-15. He joins Marcos Baghdatis and Sam Querrey among the players who have committed to the event.

Roddick Makes Davis Cup Comeback For 2011
Andy Roddick will be coming back to the USA Davis Cup team next season after a short hiatus this year when the American skipped the event to focus on his career. The US will be taking on Chile next March in the first round.
The USTA released a statement saying Roddick will make Davis Cup one of his top priorities next year. Jim Courier will take over as coach of the US team.
Roddick is 31-11 in Davis Cup play, trailing only John McEnroe's 41.

WTA Tour 2010 Awards
The following awards have been given to WTA players for 2010:
Kim Clijsters: Player of the Year
Justine Henin: Comeback Player of the Year
Maria Sharapova: Humanitarian of the Year
Flavia Pennetta/Gisela Dulko: Doubles Team of the Year
Petra Kvitova: Newcomer of the Year
I guess it was Serena Williams vs. Clijsters for Player of the Year but since Clijsters won 5 titles and played for the rest of the year, she won the award over Williams.

Dementieva Ends Career At 29
Russian Elena Dementieva got a tearful farewell today after announcing her retirement from tennis at the age of 29. Dementieva reached two finals in her career at the 2004 French and US Open.
She lost both finals to her fellow Russians, Anastasia Myskina and Svetlana Kuznetsova, respectively. Dementieva reached the semifinals of Wimbledon and US Open also.
I remember the first time I saw Elena was in 2000 when she lost to Venus Williams at the Sydney Olympics. Really thought she would have a stellar career the way she played.
In some degree, beside being of the best women tennis players ever to not have won a Grand Slam, the Russian has had a great career. Her serve was the main weapon stopping her from winning that final match at the slam finals.
I don't see a comeback for Elena unless she works out her serve and decides to come back in her mid 30's or something. This is a very small chance though.
Wish her well and she will be greatly missed!

End of Season...Loads of Injuries
You know the end of the season is here ad players are falling left and right with injuries. Justine Henin ended her season then Venus Williams then Svetlana Kusnetsova and probably Serena Williams too.
A bunch of other players have also been hit with injuries and end of season tired mode it seems. Refael Nadal has not played well enough since winning the US Open.
Just lots of tired people working hard to see the end of the 2010 tennis season.

Murray Seeks Coaching Help
Andy Murray has confirmed he has been talking to his mother about getting a coach. The Scot has gone without a permanent coach this year and has only won one title so far during the US summer hardcourt season.
It was a disappointing loss for Murray though at the US Open.
"I'm going to have to be patient with it, take my time a little bit and I'm sure I'll find someone that will help me," Murray said in an interview. "I haven't spoken to anybody yet but I've spoken to the guys that I work with and I've spoken to my mum about the people that I might like to work with.
"I've got to try and find out the availability, how many weeks people are willing to do and make the decision based on all the information."
So mum will be making the decision perhaps.

Nadal Confirms Queen's Club For Next Year
World no. 1 Rafael Nadal has confirmed he will be coming back to the Queen's Club tournament next year. The Spaniard lost in the quarterfinals this year at the event but went on to win Wimbledon anyway.
Nadal has reached the Wimbledon's final every year he has played at the warmup tournament.
"After the French Open, it is very important for me to feel the grass under my feet as soon as possible," Nadal said Tuesday.
He is participating in next week's event in Thailand. The ATP has already announced he is the Year-End world no.1 after winning the US Open.

Nadal Wins The Big And Final Piece of The Puzzle
Rafael Nadal became the seventh man to win all four slam, but only the second beside from Agassi, to have won the Gold medal at the Olympics and the four slams. This is not an easy feat.
It might be too soon, but I am glad Nadal won it this year because defending champ Juan MD Potro was not able to play. Most people would agree Del Potro could have been a tough opponent for Nadal.
Spain is having one heck of a year!

Time For Bonus Ranking Points
So what did Kim Clijsters get for winning the US Open? Well, beside from the big paychecks, she got slapped down the rankings to three spots.
Maybe it's time for the WTA and ATP Tour to award bonus points if a player successfully defend his/her title; especially, at the slam. For example, the WTA should have awarded Clijsters half of the 2,000 championship points she could have gotten had she not won it last year.
So 1,000 points for the Belgian for winning it. Just give players half of the ranking bonus points for successful getting into the round they were in the tournament in the previous year.
This would help solve the ranking problem for a bit.

After Labor Day Workout
Yesterday was one heck was a tennis day for the US Open. It was the best actions and the fans really got their money worth with so many great matches.
Both of the women's quarterfinal matches were great. Two-time champ Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters worked hard to fend off the French Open reigning champ Francesca Schiavone and runner-up Samantha Stosur.
I have to say Sam Querrey and Stanilas Wawrinka stole the show in the afternoon and David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco stole the highlight of the day with their match. Verdasco took the Shot of the Day for sure on match point.
Rafael Nadal is looking strong so far being the only player yet to drop serve. But this is too early to tell for Nadal until he actually reaches the final because we can't forget what Juan MD Potro did to the Spaniard last year in the semifinal.

Last American Standing...Fall Off
I am not going to make this into a sad story because Sam Querrey played a great match, and yes, he was the last American left and could have won against Stanilas Wawrinka yesterday, but it has been a great first week for the US men. We saw some new talents such as Ryan Harrison on the men's side and Beatrice Capra on the women's side.
It is good news they are slowing working up the ladder. Some good news is better than none.
Andy Roddick will get over this loss and move on as he always does. He still has the tennis in him for a while.
Mardy Fish is playing better and Melanie Oudin will get better as the years progress. All in all, something to look forward to.

Schiavone Climbing The Mountain Again
Italian no. 1 Francesca Schiavone knows she is no 18-year-old girl, but the Italian is enjoying her tennis now than ever. Schiavone is playing well so far at the US Open where she hopes to win her second slam of the year.
"I'm 30 years old and I want to enjoy the people," she said in her post-match interview. "And I feel like the people enjoy me, and for me that's important."
The Italian also referenced her tennis career as climbing up the mountain.
"I think when you try to reach the top of a mountain then you can't go more and more up," she said. "Then you have to go down and come back up again. I'm doing this and, when it's time to come back up again, I will do it."
She got on the top by winning the French, and now she is at the bottom again trying to go up with the US Open. It is good to see that she is happy with how things are going.

Wozniak Pulls A Henin
Canada's top-ranked female tennis player, Aleksandra Wozniak, no relation to Caroline Wozniacki, is calling it quit for the season. The Canadian has been suffering from a forearm injury and will lay low like Justine Henin for the rest of the year.
"I have tried everything and obviously there is nothing more that I can do, my injury simply needs time to heal," the 22-year-old said in a statement Wednesday.
Wozniack is ranked 54th in the world and has been suffering from tendinitis in her right forearm for several weeks. She did play at the Rogers Cup but lost in the first round.
The Canadian lost in the first round at the US Open this past Monday sets.
"It was a difficult decision to make to end my season this way, but in the long run it is the best one," Wozniak said. "With my results from last year I had every reason to believe that I could be a top-20 player, but instead I had to overcome many setbacks which affected my game and my confidence," she said. "It was my year of challenges and part of me is relieved that it's over."

Wozniacki Rolls Over Chang
It looks like Caroline Wozniacki is impatient for the final Saturday at the US Open. The Dane, who won Montreal and Pilot Pen Tennis tournaments, is looking impressive in her first two rounds.
Wozniacki pulled a double-bagel of her Taipei opponent earlier. She defeated Kai-Chen Chan, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the third round.
This is look mighty good for Wozniacki because she is the hottest player on the women's side this summer having won the US Open Series. She will be going for the $1 million bonus if she wins the US Open.

American Harrison Hopes To Shine
On the women's side, 18-year-old Beatric Capra is keeping the USA flag alive with Venus Williams. On the men's side, the American are also shining bright so far.
Even though Roddick might have lost early, 18-year-old Ryan Harrison made it through to the big one yesterday by upsetting Ivan Ljubicic in the first round. The American is hoping this will be a start of a good US Open run.
"To win on this stage here and to take out a top 20 player in the world is the biggest win of my career," Harrison said.
Harrison became the first young American man in nearly a decade to knock off a Top 20 player in a Grand Slam event. Roddick did it in 2001 when he upset no.11 seed Alex Corretja at the US Open.
"Roddick has been helping me since I was 15, 16 years old," Harrison said. "Every time I see him, he's always been extremely helpful and really talked to me a lot about some of the things he experienced when he was first coming up."
He next face Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Oudin Ready For Fresh Start
Melanie Oudin lost in a disastrous second round match where she hit over 38 unforced errors and less than 10 winners to Alona Bondarenko. The American said afterward not that the US Open is over, she can start a new career and forget what happened last year.
“I guess I’m a little tiny bit relieved now,” Oudin said. “I can kind of start over from all the expectations from last year. And now I can just go out and hopefully do really well the rest of the year and keep working hard.”
Ironically, a fellow American newcomer, Beatrice Capra might be stealing Oudin's limelight this year. The unseeded American player knocked off 18th-seeded Aravane Rezai of France, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, yesterday, to advance to the third round of the US Open.
Capra could next face, guess it, Maria Sharapova.

Pump-In-The-Head For Azarenka
Victoria Azarenka must have done some really intensive warm-up before her match because she hit her head and it was the cause of her collapsing during her first round match yesterday.
“She was just doing some footwork exercises, and she tripped on the bottom of her own sweat pants and ended up falling and hitting her head on the ground,” her agent, John Tobias, said. “Unbelievable.”
Azarenka said she fell dizzy from the accident and it got worst during her match.
Hope she rests up and will be okay.

Roddick Outplayed By Tipsarevic
While it is a sad ending for Andy Roddick by making his quickest exit at the US Open in his career, you have to tip your hat to Janko Tipsarevic because the Serb played a brilliant match after losing the first set. Tipsarevic won, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Roddick got a little defensive in those three sets, especially, during the second and it let Tipsarevic into the match and he didn't let go of it. Roddick played well but the Serb just played even better.
He had a few foot-fault called and did get agitated with the lineswoman and the Chair Umpire, but of course he didn't go Serena on them. While the talk is about him retiring, if Roddick can still play, he has every passion to do so.
Pete Sampras won the US Open late in his career, and Roddick has what it takes to win a slam.

Nadal Looks To Improve Serve
Rafael Nadal is desperate to win the US Open to collect the Grand Slam, but he isn't going to jump over the London Bridge if that days never come. The Spaniard started off his quest with a very tough match against Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili last night.
It took three sets but Nadal managed through. After the match, the world no.1 said his serve helped him through the match.
“My serve tonight worked well,” said the eight-times grand slam winner, who needs a U.S. Open title to complete a career grand slam. “Hopefully it will continue like this.
He topped his fastest serve last night with a 130mph serve.
“My serve is not my best shot but I always try hard to keep improving and that’s what I’m working on all the time.”

Wozniacki: Midnight Woman
They wanted equal prize money and they got it and Caroline Wozniacki also got past midnight before she finished her match and get off court to go to bed. With the change at the US Open where men and women get to play second in interval, Rafael Nadal finished off his match pretty late and left the Dane in the dusk.
“Thank you for sticking around,” Wozniacki told what was left of the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd afterward, “even though I know it’s been a long night.”
Wozniacki took care of NCAA champ Chelsey Gullickson, 6-1, 6-1, with the match ending at 12:53am this morning.
“She’s hitting the ball really hard. She has a really great game,” Wozniacki said of her opponent. “I know it’s tough to be here for the first time … but I’m sure with experience, she’ll be back and play even stronger.”

Azarenka Collapsed; Wheeled Off Court
Victoria Azarenka was forced to retired in her match against Gisela Dulko earlier today in her first round match at the US Open after she collapsed on court. She was later rushed off in a wheelchair.
The weather isn't that bad today with 90 degree and only 40% of humidity. So it can't be a heat stroke but from what it seems, maybe that is what she suffered.
Fans were on their feet as well as Dulko herself because they did not know what was happening to Azarenka.
“I was scared,” said Dulko, who advanced to the third round. “She went to the floor. I was worried for her. I went to see her, brought some ice, did whatever I could do to help.”
Usually the danger of the heat is when the humidity is high, but maybe with the sun shining down on the court, it was tougher than it looks.
“It’s tough to play out there,” Dulko said. “It’s really hot, really humid. You sweat so much, sometimes it’s impossible to hold the racquet.”

All Eyes On Earl
While the tennis world is focusing on US Open, there is something else to be looking at this week during Week 1 at the Open. His name is Earl...Hurricane Earl!
While the projection path is showing the Category 4 hurricane to be heading out by this weekend, there will probably be lots of rain falling on the East coast which could possibly count New York. Right now let's hope for no rain because it will be Labor Day weekend.
People will be out in force to watch tennis at Flushing Meadow and a little rain will put a dampen on the people's holidays plan.

Women's Draw: Who Wants To Win It? Really...
Justine Henin is out, Serena Williams is hoping her being out this year will erase fans' memories of what happened last year...with these two out and about partying somewhere during the US Open, will Kim Clijsters win again?
That will be the tough task for Mama Clijsters because she has never defended a slam before in her career. As mentioned, she retired after winning the Open in 2005 so she never defend it.
The women's draw is so 'everywhere'-if that is the right word to use-that you just don't know who will make it to the end of the second week. Clijsters' hip is questionable, Caroline Wozniacki is playing well of late, Samantha Stosur is nursing her shoulder, Maria Sharapova is coming back slowly, and the rest of the ladies are just all struggling badly this year.
Jelena Jankovic has not played well, Francesca Schiavone is a question mark, and Venus Williams comes into the Open without playing a match since Wimbledon. Countrywoman Melanie Oudin has not had the success she had hoped for since her big run last year at the tournament.
Oudin has the most to lose because if she loses early she will fall off the map and her fairy tale story will cease to exist by next year. Right now, things are a mess for the WTA Tour.
The year started out with a bang with Justine and Serena duking it out and ends with both of them not playing at the US Open. Injuries and bad results mere the status of the women at the Open this year.
It will come down to who can actually keep it together until the second Saturday.

Men's Draw: Who Will Win?
With Juan Martin Del Potro not playing this year, who will fill in his shoes as the dark horse to upstage the Pack 4: Federer, Nadal, Murray, and Djokovic. The list is pretty long, but who will really stand out from the rest?
This will be a long shot but Mardy Fish could cause quite a stir if he does maintain his summer form so farm and stun a few players to get into second week. Marin Cilic could be another contender if he keeps his head together and his serve.
Robin Soderling will be another threat for the Fab 4 and he will have his test with Federer again if both go far into the quarterfinals. We should also not forget about Andy Roddick.
The American is back in the top 10 and this is the lone slam he has won in his career. With a powerful serve but not much to back it up against the Fab 4, Roddick will need to put everything together to pull off some upset.
Nadal is struggling on the courts of the US Open so he will also have to dig deep. Both Murray and Djokovic could shine again, and the same thing can be said of Federer who is desperate to win this one beside from the Aussie Open.
With how things are playing out so far for the US Open, Federer and Murray might tough it out this year.

Clijsters Balances Tennis And Life
Defending champion Kim Clijsters is holding a 14-match winning streak at the US Open because she won it in 2004 and last year. She did not play in 2006-2008, so her streak is on the line next week when the US Open starts.
Beside from her tennis life, Clijsters nowadays is strictly focusing on her husband and daughter. They are very much her priority.
“It’s about balancing; just listening to yourself. I have days when … I want to spend time with Jada, and I don’t want to go to practice, and I want to make sure I’m there for her,” Clijsters said. “And luckily, I’m not the type of athlete who, if I don’t do it, I’m going to be panicking.”
The Belgian is the second seed in the tournament.

Lucky Fan Gets Shirt From Murray
If you have no use for Twitter like me, you might want to change your mind because a lucky fan of Andy Murray guessed right on who his first round opponent would be for the US Open and the person won a signed US Open T-shirt from the Brit. Murray has already arrived in New York practicing the the tournament.
His first round opponent will be 22-year-old Slovak Lukas Lacko. Murray won his first tournament of the year a couple of weeks ago in Toronto.
It has been a good summer for him, minus the bad knee which might have played a part in his loss in Cincinnati to Mardy Fish.

Stosur Ready For US Open
French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur has not had a good hardcourt season leading up to the US Open due to injuries and bad losses, but the Australia said in an interview she is ready for the last slam of they ear.
“There’s no reason why I couldn’t do better than I have at the U.S. Open and I don’t know why I haven’t had a good result there,” Stosur said. “Last year I played lots of matches leading into New York, more than I ever had. The first time that happens it takes a toll. I was a little fried.”
Stosur has never advanced past the second round of the US Open. She is the fifth seed at the event.

Wozniacki Draws Sharapova For Fourth Round
With shoulder injuries and other kind of injuries floating around on the women's side, the seeds are all over the place. This plays out well for tennis fans because it seems top players go up against one another early in the week.
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki picked up one of the bad stick when she was given Maria Sharapova on her side. She might also have to take down Na Li and Jelena Jankovic to get through.
Defending champ Kim Clijsters got a little break though she will still have to get past Samantha Stosur in the quarterfinals. The Belgian was presented at the draw ceremony and said she will get her medical checkup for the hip after the tournament ends.
"Practicing this week, it felt much better," Clijster said. "Even if it's bad, it's not like I'm not going to play the US Open. If it still bothers me after the Open, I will go get it tested."

Top Draw For Federer
While fans will be hoping Rafael Nadal will make it to his first US Open final this year, a rematch with Nadal and Roger Federer will be a bit of a top task after the Swiss was put in a match-up with Robin Soderling for the quarterfinals. Soderling knocked off Federer at the French Open in the same round earlier this year.
If he gets past the Swede, Novak Djokovic might wait for him in the semifinals. With the way some of the top players are playing of late, it might not be as dramatic as the draw makes it to be.
Nadal will have to contend with Andy Murray on his side of the draw if he wants to make it to the second Sunday. Murray will have to take care of Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.

Fast Time For Blake
James Blake knocked out Pere Riba, 6-0, 6-1, in 35 minutes on Tuesday to advance in New Haven.
This must be some kind of a record for any match. Have to ask Martina Hingis.

Red Alert For Oudin
Melanie Oudin is having a bad year and maybe most people saw this coming for the young America, but with the US Open coming next week, she will have to be on her toes. With a quarterfinal appearance last year, Oudin has a ton of points to defend.
She entered the Pilot Pen event this week to get some matches in but lost in the first round, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, to lucky loser Dominka Cibulkova of Slovakia.
"Last year nobody had any expectations of me," Oudin said. "Now everybody expects me to do well every time I play. Almost every person in the United States expects me to win every single match I play, so, I mean, that's kind of a little bit of pressure."
Oudin is definitely leading the young talent on the women's side for the USA so pressure will be on her definitely to play well with Serena and Venus Williams getting toward their retirement years.
"I'm not going to get down on myself because of what I thought I should've done after playing so well at last year's U.S. Open," she said. "I know I can get better, (but) overall I think I'm doing fine for someone in her first full year on the tour ... playing in main draws against the best in the world."

Stosur Saves Math Points To Advance
Since the French Open, Samantha Stosur has been having a bit of a letdown like Francesca Schiavone. She found herself in quite a struggle and some scary moment yesterday in her second round against Sara Errani.
The Aussie was up a set, 6-1, when things fell apart for her. Stosur lost the second set and had to save four match points before advancing in the tiebreak in the third set.
“I just tried to hang in there and eventually got through that game, and once I won that then I knew that I was in a good spot,” Stosur said.
She added she has not been able to practice her serve much since injuring her right arm, which caused her to skip Cincinnati and Montreal.
“I actually hadn’t hit more than about 30 serves in any practice session yet, so it was a good test for it tonight, and it was all good,” she said.
The Aussie no. 1 has also announced she will be playing in Brisbane next year.
"With any luck I will get the chance to be there on the final day of the tournament and be the first Aussie champion of the Brisbane international," Stosur said.

Roddick Coming Back For Brisbane Defend
Andy Roddick started out this season by winning the Brisbane International tennis tournament in January. The American has announced he will be coming back to the tournament next year.
"I enjoyed the tournament and I feel it is the best preparation for me for the Australian Open," Roddick said. "It was a big tournament for me last year just because I was coming off an extended lay-off and so I was a little anxious to get back out on the court. Obviously to come away with a win was more than I expected, and it was a good memory."
The tournament director, Steve Ayles, is happy with the news that the defending champ Roddick will be coming back.
"He is our defending champion and it only seems fitting to have the former number one and 2003 US Open champion the first locked in for 2011," he said.

Quote of the Day
“I’ve never felt better on the court and I’ve never been more confident and I’ve never played better. So I kept that in the back of my head, that I’ve won a lot of matches this summer.”

New Haven Looks For New Sponsor
With Pilot Pen dropping its $2 million sponsorship after this year tournament in New Haven, the tournament is in a frenzy to look for a new title sponsor. Pilot Pen has been sponsoring the event for the last 14 years.
The end of the sponsorship was blamed on a the poor economy. Organizers for the tournamens hope this won't be the last of New Haven.
“We’ve gotten a lot of excitement and a lot of good feedback,” tournament director Anne Worcester said. “But in this economy companies are just not expanding their sports portfolio. We’ve gotten so close with some big international brands. But it’s got to be the right time, right place, and it’s got to fit in with their strategy.”
New Haven is a joint tournament for both WTA and ATP Tour so they better come up with a sponsor quick.
“I think we’re going to be looking at every conceivable scenario,” said USTA spokesman Chris Widmaier. “But our ultimate goal is to get a title sponsor, and we want to keep this as a combined event in New Haven.”

Ivanovic Sits Out New Haven
Ana Ivanovic was looking forwad to playing in New Haven to prepapre for the US Open but her ankle hasn't yet heal enough so she has withdrawn from the tournament.
"I'm really disappointed to be withdrawing," Ivanovic said. "I'd been looking forward to playing in New Haven ever since I had my wild card request accepted. I've really enjoyed being here the past few days: it's a beautiful city, and feels very European to me."
The Serb hit the practice court last Thursday and realized her ankle was still giving her some problem.
" I practiced for the first time on Thursday, but today when I went on court, I felt that it was getting worse and I was feeling a lot of pain. There is just no way I will be ready for the tournament."

Rain Falls on Montreal
The four ladies contesting the semifinals in Montreal only were able to play two games before the rain came. Caroline Wozniacki was leading Svetlana Kuznetsova, 2-0, earlier today before the rain came and the whole day was cancelled.
Vera Zvonareva and Victoria Azarenka were to play the other semifinals. This is not good news because the Pilot Pen Tennis event has already started and Wozniacki is to play there to.
The delay means she will have to play extra heading into New Haven next week.

Reigning champ Juan MD Potro has officially withdrawn from the US Open. The Argentine said he is not yet ready to get back on the court.
Del Potro released a statement to ATP saying he was extremely sad that he could not play this year and added "but I have only started practicing in the last two weeks and unfortunately I cannot compete at the top level yet,” he said. “I look forward to returning to New York in 2011 and wish all the best to the tournament organizers and my fellow players.”
In the Open Era only Ken Rosewall in 1971 and Pete Sampras in 2003, didn't defend their titles. Sampras of course retired in 2002 and didn't return to defend.

Roddick, Fish Stun Top Seeds
Just when Americans were shaking their heads on why no men from the USA are in the Top 10, Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish both pulled off stunning victories over top seeds in Cincinnati. Roddick knocked off Novak Djokovic in straight sets while Fish dropped Andy Murray in three sets.
Murray needed medical treatment to his injured leg in the second set. This is also mean he will have only one week to recuperate until the US Open.

Federer Takes 6th For Forbes Top Paid Male Athletes
Considering there were a bunch of female tennis players on the female list, Roger Federer only placed 6th on the male list even though he made $43 million. Of course, Tiger Woods still leads with $638 million.
While tennis and golf take most of the spots in the top 10 for the women, there were a variety of sports on the men's side. Sports is still a man's game and you can see it just by the amount of money being paid for the contracts.

Nadal Rallies Past Benneteau After Saving Match Point
It was a tough day for many of the top players in Cincinnati yesterday. Roger Federer probably enjoyed his nemesis fighting in the heat while he got a walkover from Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Andy Roddick needed six match points to get rid of Robin Soderling and finally won a tiebreak against the Swede after losing four of them; the fourth including the second set he lost last night. Andy Murray also survived a big test from Ernist Gulbis and took out the third set tiebreak.
Top ranked Rafael Nadal got the scare of his life when he had to face a match point against Julien Bennetau in the second set after losing the first. Nadal was up 4-1 in the break but then was down 5-6.
He saved the match point and advanced.
"A match like this gives me a lot of confidence," Nadal said. "It's important for everything. A match point? Yeah. I am doing this well. I am playing aggressive. But I need to do better the next few days."

Blake Hopes For Good New Haven Showing
James Blake lost to Denis Istomin in Cincinnati this week and he has already gained a wildcard into the US Open and New Haven next week. The American hopes he will have the home crowd on his side next week to boost his US Open preparation.
"I know what would be best for me is to have a real rest and get my body healthy," said Blake. "But I really want to play New Haven and I really want to play at the U.S. Open, so I know we're gonna be kind of playing beat the clock and see if I can be as healthy as possible going in there."
Blake has been struggling with injuries of late.
"If I'm at the point where I'm at today and not feeling any better than I did today, then I don't know if I'll be able to," he added. "But I really think with a couple days off I'll be able to be a lot better. The hometown crowds there will hopefully lift my spirits a lot, and I'll have a whole a lot to play for."

Aussie Koellerer Gets Suspension For Betting
The Tennis Integrity Unit said Thursday Australian player, Daniel Koellerer, has been given a three-month suspension ban after admitting to using his personal website to facilitate betting on matches. The 27-year-old, ranked 134th in the world, was also fined with $19,250.

Razzano Receives US Open Wildcard
Veteran Virginia Razzano of France is among one of the few who have received a wildcard into the US Open this year. The USTA gave Razzano, Kiki Vandeweghe, Chelsey Gullickson, Coco Vandeweghe, Jamie Hampton, Christina McHale, Shelby Rogers, and Sophie Ferguson each a wildcard into the event.
The last wildcard will be going to the woman who wins the USTA Playoffs in Florida.
Razzano has two career WTA titles, including the Japan Open in 2007 where she defeated Venus Williams in three sets.

Safina and Ivanovic: BFF Like Never Before
Two years ago, both Ana Ivanovic and Dinara Safina were at the top of their games and both met in the final of the French Open. Ivanovic prevailed and won her maiden slam in 2008.
It has been quite a fall for both of them since then. The two have been practicing together and hanging out on and off the courts, but it was not like this before as Safina admitted during a press conference last week in Cincinnati.
"The funny thing is, we've been so long on the Tour and we never really talked with each other," Safina said. "I knew she'd been going through some tough moments, but I didn't know her… I felt she was much more protected, or closed."
Both girls are not enjoying the company of each other and go out to dinner once in a while.
"We practiced and it was like, Okay, so let's go for dinner," said Safina. "We went for dinner, and really she's a very nice girl. We had so much fun. She's playing much better, and I just wish her really good luck."

Murray Enjoying Coachless Time
Andy Murray has been without a coach for while and after winning in Toronto last week, he knows he can go without one. The Brit has admitted he is enjoying his time alone without a coach.
"I feel a lot of freedom," Murray said Tuesday. "I've only been a few weeks on my own. But I played some of my best tennis last week, I don't know if it's from not having a coach or not. But I know I've improved since Wimbledon."
His win over David Nalbandian, Rafael Nadal, and final-nemesis Roger Federer last week put a lot of confidence that he can go alone.
"I won't have a coach at the US Open. After that I'll have a break to sit down and think about it," Murray said. "I don't want to rush into choosing anyone. It's a big decision. You spend a lot of time with a coach and you want that relationship to last as long as possible. I need to think long and hard. In some ways it's nice not to have a coach for a while. I have more responsibility to figure out a few things by myself on court."
Murray won six titles last year, but has only captured one this year, which was last week in Toronto.

Del Potro Goes Without Pain
If you are a fan of Juan MD Potro, there is more good news coming out of the Argentine's camp. Del Potro's trainer, Diego Rivas, told the newspaper, Clarin, the reigning US Open champ is doing well and is without pain.
"Juan Martin is without pain and everything's he's done up to this moment is without pain," Diego Rivas said.
He added Del Potro will be practicing in Miami because the weather is getting cooler in Buenos Aires. No words on his withdrawal from the US Open but it looks very much like so.

Venus Gears Up For US Open
Venus Williams has not played since Wimbledon, and like her sister, Serena, both are still entered in the US Open. Venus withdrew from Cincinnati and Montreal due to a knee injury.
"I was not feeling 100 percent and I am very sad I wasn’t able to go back to Cincinnati and make my first appearance in Montreal," Venus wrote on her official website. "But I am getting geared up to play in New York in just a couple of weeks. I have been training very hard in the gym and getting back on the court."
Venus has spent her time off focusing on her schoolwork the last couple of weeks.

Henin Ends Season
Justine Henin has announced she will be taking the rest of the 2010 season off due to her lingering elbow injury. The Belgian sustained the injury during her quarterfinals loss to Kim Clijsters.
She has not played since that match and has decided to take a rest to prepare for the 2011 season.
“I took several medical examinations and it is going in the right direction,” Henin said. “But it is still a slow recovery, so I need to be patient again until the end of 2010.”
She won Stuttgart and Den Bosch this year. Henin plans to make her comeback next year at the Hopman Cup.

Blake Among Wildcard Winners For US Open
Two-time quarterfinalist James Blake is getting a good deal from the USTA. The American is among some of the early wildcard winners for the year last Grand Slam.
Blake joins Bradley Klahn, Jack Sock, Ryan Sweeting, Donald Young, Carsten Ball, and Guillaume Rufin into the tournament. The eight wildcard will be going to the Playoff winner of the US Open Playoffs from the USTA beginning this Wednesday.

USTA Wildcard Playoff Update
With the US Open only less than two weeks to go, time is almost here for one lucky man and one lucky woman to get a wildcard into the tournament as they are slowly narrowing down the fields. All over the country, amateur tennis players have played their hearts out during the summer to get into the Open.
Now, only 16 players are left and only two will be able to get into the playoffs. If they are good enough, they might even get into the main draw.
"Our wild card tournaments for the Australian and French Opens have shown that our philosophy of letting our top emerging players compete for the opportunity to play at the highest levels is working," said Patrick McEnroe, General Manager, USTA Player Development. "I believe that applying this process to the US Open sends a strong message to our players that opportunities such as a US Open wild card are meant to be earned through hard work, dedication and competition."
The list below names the 16 players who have made it through:
Men
Chase Buchanan – New Albany, Ohio
Andrea Collarini – Boca Raton, Fla.
Alexander Domijan – Wesley Chapel, Fla
Ryan Harrison – Bradenton, Fla.
Jarmere Jenkins – College Park, Ga.
Steve Johnson – Orange, Calif.
Austin Krajicek – Brandon, Fla.
Tim Smyczek – Milwaukee, Wis.
Women
Julia Boserup – Boca Raton, Fla.
Madison Brengle – Dover, Del.
Beatrice Capra – Ellicott City, Md.
Irina Falconi – Jupiter, Fla.
Nicole Gibbs – Santa Monica, Calif.
Krista Hardebeck – Santa Ana, Calif.
Madison Keys – Boca Raton, Fla.
Alison Riske – McMurray, Pa.
The playoffs will be played on August 18-20 in Florida. Men will play five sets like the real tournaments, which will suck for them.
But they have about a week of rest before the real tournament so enough time to rest for the men.

Quote of the Day
“I’m just playing a bit freer. I was going for my shots more today. You know, just felt pretty calm on the court all week, and if you can put sort of the emotions and how you’re feeling into I guess the way you’re playing rather than sort of showing it after every point, sort of saving up and putting into the points and the rallies, I felt like it worked well. It was one of the best weeks I’ve had, it was just kind of expressing myself with the way I was playing. I played pretty free flowing tennis and didn’t get too nervous.”

Safina Advances in Montreal
Dinara Safina has fallen all the way down to number 70 on the ranking but she hopes Montreal will be a place for her to have a better start for the 2010 season. Since her back injury the Russian has struggled mightily but she won her first match against Andrea Petkovic at the Rogers Cup and is happy to be back.
"It's a nice feeling to be back. I've played my best tennis here," Safina said. "When I went on the court the people cheered and it was really nice. I'll try to win more and hopefully they'll put me on Centre Court so I can feel that again."
The Russian won this event back in 2008 over Dominika Cibulkova. She will be facing either Nadia Petrova or Lucie Safarova in the next round.
Elena Dementieva is the defending champion. She defeated Maria Sharapova, who pulled out of the event due to foot injury, last year to win.

Federer Enters Stockholm Open
In 2008, Roger Federer withdrew from the Stockholm Open at the last minute and he did not play last year. This year, the Swiss is making it up to crowds at the tournament.
The world no. 2 has entered the tournament this year.
"I was supposed to play two years ago but my schedule was too tough. This year I have organized a better schedule which means that I will be well prepared...I keep my promises," Federer said.
Hometown boy Robin Soderling will of course be playing as well as Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych.
