Dinara Safina has fallen all the way down to number 70 on the ranking but she hopes Montreal will be a place for her to have a better start for the 2010 season. Since her back injury the Russian has struggled mightily but she won her first match against Andrea Petkovic at the Rogers Cup and is happy to be back.
"It's a nice feeling to be back. I've played my best tennis here," Safina said. "When I went on the court the people cheered and it was really nice. I'll try to win more and hopefully they'll put me on Centre Court so I can feel that again."
The Russian won this event back in 2008 over Dominika Cibulkova. She will be facing either Nadia Petrova or Lucie Safarova in the next round.
Elena Dementieva is the defending champion. She defeated Maria Sharapova, who pulled out of the event due to foot injury, last year to win.
