One Sister In, One Sister Out

On a day of celebration for the Williams Sisters, it was only half to be exact.

When Venus Williams defeated Francesca Schiavone to advance to the quarterfinal, she was guaranteed to move to the No. 2 position in the world ranking, right behind Serena. It was a grand day for the sisters being in the Top 2 positions once again.

But a few hours later, Serena lost to Nadia Petrova and the celebration ended just when it started. The younger of the sisters lost in three sets and will have to sit out for the rest of the week.

Serena is just one of the many top players already leaving Madrid this week before the quarterfinals. Only Venus and Samantha Stosur are still left in the draw.

The rest of the other seeds have crashed out days ago including Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Dinara Safina, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Caroline Wozniacki, who lost yesterday.

Madrid is becoming a burial ground this week for the top ladies of the WTA Tour on clay.
