Jelena Jankovic and Francesca Schiavone got a short stay in Sydney after both lost in the first rounds. Schiavone lost a three setters to big hitting Alisa Kleybanova while Jankovic also lost another three setters to Aravane Rezai.
It was Jankovic first tournament match of the year and she would have hoped for more matches with the year first slam coming next week. Schiavone got injured last week in Perth during the Hopman Cup so it was a surprise she still played in the event.
Samantha Stosur defeated Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets, while Victoria Azarenka and Li Na both advanced. Azarenka survived Ekaterina Makarova in three sets and Li easily defeated Anastasia Rodionova.
